COMET-ME is an Israeli-Palestinian organization providing basic energy and clean water services to off-grid communities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) using environmentally and socially sustainable methods. Its work is motivated by the desire to alleviate the conditions imposed on these communities by violence and conflict. Through the installation of renewable wind and solar energy systems and household water pumping and filtration systems, COMET-ME opens the door to social and economic empowerment for some of the poorest and most marginalized rural communities in the OPT. Access to regular electricity has profound effects on everyday life. Nighttime illumination and cell-phone charging provide increased security and stability. Electric appliances and water pumps increase revenues for family dairy production and create time for women who would otherwise be hauling water, washing, and churning butter, all by hand.
In addition to providing sustainable energy and clean water to off-grid communities, COMET-ME aims to empower marginalized communities and overcome barriers of hostility through joint work of Israelis and Palestinians on the ground. The organization serves over 3,000 people in 30 communities in the OTP.
In 2014, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund made a grant of $100,000 to COMET-ME for general support.
